American Moslem Society (Masjid Dearborn) is a major congregational mosque in Dearborn, Michigan, with roots in the city’s early twentieth-century growth as Muslim workers settled near the River Rouge industrial complex. As Dearborn’s Muslim population expanded through the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, the society grew into a prominent religious and communal institution. In 1986, the mosque expanded to about 24,000 square feet, and its large prayer hall accommodates approximately 2,000 worshipers, making it one of the largest mosques in North America. The society has long served as an important gathering place for worship and shared community identity, and its public prominence was underscored by a 2005 grand reopening attended by leading state, county, and local officials.
