How Ranking Works

Nusu's ranking system is built on a simple principle: the best professionals should be the easiest to find. We do not sell placement or boost listings for money. Instead, our algorithm evaluates professionals based on merit, helping you discover quality services with confidence.

This page explains how our ranking system works, what factors influence position, and how we maintain fairness for both consumers and professionals. We believe you deserve to know how discovery works.

Our Ranking Philosophy

Traditional discovery platforms often prioritize whoever pays the most. Nusu takes a different approach. We believe rankings should reflect actual quality, not advertising budgets.

This creates a healthier ecosystem where:

  • Consumers find professionals based on genuine merit
  • Professionals compete on service excellence, not marketing spend
  • New and independent professionals have a fair chance to be discovered
  • Trust is built through transparency, not hidden incentives

What Influences Ranking

Our algorithm considers multiple signals to determine ranking position. These factors work together to surface professionals who deliver genuine value. Here is a quick overview, with detailed explanations below.

SignalWhat it measuresWhy it matters
Rating qualityBayesian-adjusted average ratingReflects genuine consumer satisfaction
Review depthVolume and substance of reviewsMore feedback means more confidence
Verification statusConfirmed credentials and identitySignals trustworthiness and commitment
Profile completenessQuality of information providedHelps consumers make informed decisions
RelevanceMatch to search query and locationSurfaces the right professional for your needs
RecencyHow recently profile was updatedActive professionals stay current

Rating quality

We use a Bayesian rating system rather than simple averages. This prevents a professional with one five-star review from outranking a professional with hundreds of positive reviews. The system requires statistical confidence before high ratings significantly influence ranking.

What this means in practice: A new professional with a single perfect review will not immediately appear at the top of results. As they accumulate more reviews, their rating becomes more influential. This protects consumers from potentially misleading early ratings while giving established professionals credit for their track record.

Review depth

We look beyond star counts. Review volume matters, but so does substance. A professional with fifty detailed reviews provides more signal than one with fifty one-word ratings.

We also consider review recency. Recent reviews carry more weight than older ones, since they better reflect current service quality. A professional who was excellent three years ago but has declined recently should not rank as highly as one delivering consistent quality today.

Verification status

Professionals who complete our verification process demonstrate commitment to transparency. Verification may include confirming business registration, licensing, credentials, and identity.

Verified professionals receive a ranking boost because verification:

  • Reduces the risk of fraudulent or misrepresented listings
  • Confirms the professional is who they claim to be
  • Shows investment in building consumer trust
  • Validates credentials where applicable

Profile completeness

Complete profiles rank higher than sparse ones. This includes detailed service descriptions, accurate hours, quality photos, pricing information, and comprehensive business details.

A complete profile helps consumers in several ways:

  • Understand what services are offered before contacting
  • Evaluate fit without extensive back-and-forth
  • Compare professionals on consistent criteria
  • Make confident booking decisions

Profile completeness also signals professional engagement with the platform. Professionals who invest time in their profiles tend to be more committed to the consumers who find them.

Relevance

Rankings are contextual. A search for “deep tissue massage” surfaces professionals specializing in that service. A search in Los Angeles prioritizes professionals serving that area.

Relevance factors include:

  • Service match: How well the professional's offerings align with the search query
  • Geographic proximity: Distance from the searcher's location
  • Category alignment: Primary category match receives stronger weight than secondary categories
  • Availability: Professionals accepting new clients may rank higher in some contexts

Recency

Profiles that are regularly updated rank better than stale ones. This encourages professionals to keep information current and signals active engagement with clients.

Recency applies a gradual decay over time. A profile updated last week is not dramatically different from one updated last month, but a profile untouched for two years may be deprioritized.

Fairness Measures

We actively work to prevent our ranking system from unfairly disadvantaging certain types of professionals.

New professional support

New professionals face a cold-start challenge: they lack the review history that established professionals have accumulated. Our system includes a new-business boost that gives recently joined professionals fair visibility while they build their reputation.

This boost is temporary. As professionals accumulate reviews and engagement data, the boost phases out and merit-based signals take over.

Independent professional support

Solo practitioners and small practices should not be systematically disadvantaged against larger operations. Our algorithm includes adjustments that recognize the different scale at which independent professionals operate.

Anti-gaming protections

We monitor for patterns that suggest manipulation, such as suspicious review spikes or coordinated rating activity. Professionals who attempt to game the system may face ranking penalties or removal.

We do not publish exact detection methods to prevent circumvention, but our goal is simple: rankings should reflect genuine quality, not manipulation skill.

What Does Not Influence Ranking

Equally important to understanding what affects rankings is knowing what does not.

FactorOur position
Paid placementYou cannot buy a higher position. Period.
Subscription tierFree and paid professionals compete on equal footing for organic rankings.
Advertising spendWe do not run ads that affect organic rankings. If we introduce advertising in the future, paid and organic results will be clearly distinguished.
Time on platformA professional who joined yesterday can outrank one who joined two years ago if they have stronger signals.
Personal relationshipsNusu employees cannot manually boost rankings for friends, family, or anyone else.

For Consumers

Understanding how ranking works helps you use Nusu more effectively.

What rankings tell you

  • Higher-ranked professionals generally have stronger quality signals
  • Verified professionals have confirmed their identity and credentials
  • Professionals with many detailed reviews offer more predictable experiences
  • Rankings are contextual to your search, not absolute quality scores

What rankings do not tell you

  • Whether a professional is the right fit for your specific needs
  • Personal chemistry or communication style
  • Availability for your preferred schedule
  • Whether their approach aligns with your preferences

How to use rankings wisely

Rankings are a starting point, not a final answer. We recommend reviewing profiles, reading reviews, and reaching out to professionals who seem like a good match. A professional ranked fifth might be better for your specific situation than the top-ranked result.

For Professionals

The path to better visibility is straightforward: deliver excellent service, maintain an accurate and complete profile, earn positive reviews, and stay engaged with your clients. There are no shortcuts or hacks—just quality service and authentic representation.

How to improve your ranking

ActionWhy it helps
Complete your profile thoroughlyCompleteness is a direct ranking signal
Verify your business and credentialsVerification provides a ranking boost
Encourage satisfied consumers to leave reviewsReview volume and quality influence ranking
Keep your information currentRecency signals active engagement
Add quality photosVisual content improves profile completeness
Respond to consumer inquiries promptlyEngagement quality reflects reliability

What not to do

  • Do not buy fake reviews. We detect and penalize manipulation.
  • Do not create duplicate listings. This will hurt, not help, your visibility.
  • Do not stuff keywords. Write naturally for humans, not algorithms.
  • Do not neglect your profile. Stale information hurts rankings and consumer trust.

Our Transparency Commitment

We believe you deserve to know how discovery works. While we do not publish exact algorithmic weights—this would enable gaming—we are committed to explaining the principles that guide our system.

This means:

  • We will never secretly prioritize paying customers in organic results
  • We will clearly label any sponsored or promoted content if introduced
  • We will update this page when our ranking approach changes significantly
  • We will respond to questions about ranking through our support channels

Disclaimer

This page describes our ranking approach as of the current date. Ranking algorithms evolve over time as we refine our understanding of quality signals and respond to new challenges. We will update this page to reflect significant changes, but minor adjustments may occur without notice.

Ranking position is never guaranteed. Professionals should focus on delivering excellent service and maintaining accurate profiles rather than optimizing specifically for ranking. The best long-term strategy is genuine quality.
