Blacks Run Zen Center is a Zen Buddhist meditation center in downtown Harrisonburg rooted in the Rinzai tradition. Its practice centers on the zendo, with daily seated meditation, introductory instruction for newcomers, and an open invitation to anyone willing to follow the forms and enter with sincerity. The center belongs to the Myoshin-ji temple lineage of Rinzai Zen introduced to America by Kyozan Joshu Sasaki Roshi, and its abbot, Teido (Bill) Stephens, is ordained in that tradition. Blacks Run Zen Center emphasizes disciplined practice, quiet attentiveness, and an inclusive ethos that welcomes people across backgrounds, identities, abilities, health conditions, and religions.
