American Institute of Martial Arts is a martial arts school founded in 1980 in New Haven, Connecticut. The institute focuses on disciplined, practical training rooted in self-defense, with instruction in Aikido, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Boxing, and weapons work. Its approach treats martial arts as an integrated system of movement, precision, and control rather than as isolated disciplines. Aikido is central to the school’s philosophy, including the continued development and teaching of Godo-ryu Aikido, a system created by Master Robert Liedke. Under the leadership of Sensei Jim Bonosconi, a 6th Dan in Godo-ryu Aikido who began training at the institute in 1988, the school blends traditional Aikido principles with practical methods intended for real-life self-defense. The institute’s training emphasizes lineage, adaptability, and the application of focus, discipline, and awareness both inside and beyond the dojo.
