B'nai Israel Congregation is an Orthodox synagogue in Norfolk, Virginia, with roots in the layered history of Jewish life in the Tidewater region. Its current identity emerged through the 1946 unification of the Twentieth Street Synagogue and K’hal Chasidim into the United Orthodox Synagogue, followed by a later merger in the 1950s with B’nai Israel Congregation of downtown Norfolk, when it assumed its present name. The congregation has long emphasized making traditional Judaism accessible across generations, including an early commitment to serving a younger, American-born community through English-speaking rabbinic leadership. Its purpose is to provide an outlet for traditional Jewish life in Tidewater for both young and old, preserving Orthodox practice while sustaining a welcoming communal center. Its sanctuary dates to 1946, and a 2000 redesign blended the old-country ta’am of the original main sanctuary with modern kitchens, classrooms, and a Minyan Room. B'nai Israel is also distinguished by its longstanding openness to Jewish worshipers regardless of ability to afford membership.
