Copeland graduated from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1981, completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital in 1985, practiced radiology in Traverse City until 1995, and has completed extensive hands-on training through the Barral Institute.
