Black Bamboo Pavilion Taijiquan School is a Durham-based school devoted to the study and teaching of Taijiquan as a lived practice. Its instruction extends beyond solo form to include weapons training, push hands, and shufa, or Chinese calligraphy, reflecting a traditional approach that connects movement, partner work, and brush practice as related disciplines. The school serves Durham and the surrounding area, including Pittsboro, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill, with an emphasis on depth, continuity, and serious engagement with the art. Its teaching is shaped by long experience, including Violet’s 15 years of study and teaching with LaoMa before the school’s founding and Dan’s practice beginning in 1979. Black Bamboo also emphasizes collaboration with other schools and instructors to broaden students’ experience and encourage the sharing of knowledge within the wider martial arts community.
