Beth Israel Congregation is a Reform synagogue in Florence, South Carolina, with roots in the local Jewish community dating to its formal incorporation in 1912. Grounded in Reform Judaism while maintaining close ties to Jewish tradition, the congregation has been shaped by continuity, adaptation, and communal responsibility. Its history includes an early commitment to shared leadership, including a pioneering merger of Sisterhood and Brotherhood and a practice of alternating the presidency between men and women. Beth Israel Sisterhood and Beth Israel Men’s Club have also been integral to congregational life, especially during periods of growth and expansion. Over time, the synagogue has served as a durable center of regional Jewish continuity, including through the merger of the Darlington congregation. Beth Israel’s rabbinic leadership has reflected both stability and flexibility, with leaders including Rabbi Jeffrey Ronald, Rabbi Aaron Sherman, and Rabbi Leah Doberne-Schor.
