Congregation Emanu-El is a historic synagogue in San Francisco, officially established in 1850 and recognized as Northern California’s landmark temple. The congregation includes approximately 1,850 households, with many families connected to the synagogue across generations. Its community life includes clergy-supported sick visitation through Bikkur Cholim, along with local service and partnership projects supported by the Emanu-El Community Service Fund. The congregation has a long record of communal engagement, including fundraising in 1859 on behalf of persecuted Moroccan Jews, and its Temple Emanu-El building was selected by the American Institute of Architects in 1927 as the finest piece of architecture in Northern California.
