Al-Jamia Mosque is a longstanding Islamic center in West Philadelphia, founded in 1988 by members of the University of Pennsylvania’s Muslim Students Association to serve both students and the broader Muslim community. Housed in the historic Commodore Theatre, the mosque brings together congregational worship, religious education, and community life. Its offerings include classes for spiritual and educational development, a children’s Islamic school focused on Qur’an, Arabic, and foundational Islamic values, and marriage counseling that supports faith-centered family life. Over the decades, it has become a significant anchor for the Muslim community in West Philadelphia, known for its broad neighborhood role as well as its place in the religious life of Philadelphia.
