Agudath Israel Etz Ahayem is a synagogue in Montgomery, Alabama, formed in 2001 through the union of two historic congregations: Agudath Israel, founded in 1902 by Yiddish-speaking Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe, and Etz Ahayem, founded in 1912 by Ladino-speaking Sephardi Jews, particularly from Rhodes. The congregation preserves and honors both traditions, creating a shared religious community shaped by continuity, memory, and a broad sense of belonging within Jewish life. Its history includes early worship in rented quarters, the purchase of a permanent building on Monroe Street in 1914, and a later building at McDonough and High Street in 1928. The synagogue is also connected to Montgomery’s civic history through Agudath Israel’s association with civil rights movement activism in 1955. Today, under Rabbi Zari Sussman, the congregation sustains worship and communal life for Jews of Ashkenazic, Sephardic, and other backgrounds, with support from its Sisterhood through events, contributions, projects, and mitzvah work.
