Avila Center for Community Leadership is a nonprofit retreat center in Durham, North Carolina, dedicated to connection, collaboration, and rejuvenation in support of equity-centered work. It provides space for community organizers and leaders to gather for retreat, strategy, learning, and relationship-building as part of broader efforts toward systemic change across the South and beyond. Set on 50 acres, the property began in 1957 as a Carmelite monastery and became a retreat center under the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh in 1980. Over time, it evolved from a nondenominational gathering place for faith communities and nonprofit organizations into a civic-centered setting for reflection, leadership development, and collective work. Avila is part of the wider Self-Help family through the Center for Community Self-Help.
