Beth El Congregation is a Reform Jewish synagogue in Harrisonburg, Virginia, with roots extending back more than 160 years. The congregation’s history includes the acquisition of land for a Jewish cemetery in 1876 and its formal chartering in 1877 as Hebrew Friendship Congregation before later taking the name Beth El, meaning House of God. As of 2026, the synagogue has been in its current building for 62 years, reflecting longstanding institutional continuity and a durable place in the region’s religious life. Its congregational life is expressed through worship, ritual, and communal stewardship, including a September 2019 Shabbat service that dedicated new Torah mantles and marked the first service officiated by Rabbi Grumbacher at Beth El.
